Time to do things differently.

Crises, crises

We are knee-deep in crisis. We always were. Humans evermore strive for a better life, introducing innovations, because our species is the smartest on the planet. But progress always has a hidden price. Now we have unemployment, malnutrition, stress, hated jobs, barmy prime ministers, personal data breach, alienation, processed food, climate change, pollution, pandemic, water shortage and so on.

No worries, science will sort it out

Many people think, oh well, scientists will come up with some bright ideas, we will conquer all these issues. Possible. But it will come with a price tag somewhere else. Nature plays a zero-sum game. No gain without pain.

There was a happy time....

Historians say the last truly affluent communities lived on the earth about fifteen thousand years ago. They were the hunter-gatherers, eating a varied diet, working short hours, free from infectious diseases, living with fresh air, fresh water, having fit bodies, spending abundant time to socialise and play, and last but not least, being aware of and enjoying the moments of present.

Doing things differently

There is no way back. But there are ways to do things differently. To learn how to live independently from the mainstream, how to lead a fulfilling and healthy life without hurting anyone's or anything's interest.

Crises, crises

Is there a chance that our civilization will collapse? It happened many times in the past, though not at a global scale. Rise of empires was slow while fall was fast. The main reasons are listed as economic and environmental issues which in turn generated social and political crises.

A way out

We all long for a clean, healthy and cheap living in an optimal size community. Beyond personal desires there are other factors supporting the existence of self-reliant communities. When a society is not able to provide basic needs locally, it is vulnerable to external shock. Can we be self-reliant?

A Plan

We can give up and shrug. Or fight and burn out. Or organize a local community to ward off global crises affecting our life. We can make our eco-friendly settlement and offer a haven to like-minded dwellers.  Is it possible to establish a flourishing community based on the principles of self-sustainability?

We cannot save the world.

But we can save ourselves.
